Errors From the Great Movie: Top Gun | 1. When Maverick, Goose, Merlin, and Cougar are in planes flying over the ocean, they are flying without their oxygen masks. In real life, pilots fly with their masks on at all times. 2. When Maverick is engaging MiG one, the lock on symbol for the sidewinder missile select is a green circular crosshair and turns red when a lock is aquired. The sound of locking on is also false. In the F-14, the sidewinder missile select has a green crosshair appearing on the HUD. When a lock is aquired, it flashes and makes a low pitched hum. 3. When Merlin tells Cougar they are low on fuel, he taps on the fuel gauge to show how much fuel they have. This is false because for him to do this, he would have to be sitting in the pilots seat because there is no fuel gauge in the RIO's seat. 4. When Maverick lands on the aircraft carrier, he really should of landed. A picture inside the cockpit shows Maverick pull back on the throttle completely so power is a idle and him pull back on the stick. Then as he ascends away from the carrier, it shows that his landing hook is down, which contradicts a shot previously taken showing there was no hook down. 5. When Maverick joins up with Cougar, they both have "Low Fuel". In reality, they really should have crashed into the ocean somewhere where the air battle took place. Reason being is in those planes there is an indicator called "Bingo Fuel" which means that the pilot has only enough fuel to return to the carrier. They couldn't have flown 150 miles back to the carrier on their bone dry tanks. 6. When Cougar does land on the carrier, he immediately shuts down his engines, only he can't. The carrier is completely empty of planes which means that there are most likely plenty of planes right behind him preparing to land. 7. When Maverick and Goose fly their first flight at Fighter Weapons School, they are engaging Jester. Maverick continuly does flips and rolls to help engage Jester, only this has nothing to do with locking onto a target. The radar will lock onto the aricraft when it has a strong lock. Performing rolls and flips have nothing to do with it. 8. When Maverick gets a lock on Jester, he really is too close to launch sidewinder missiles. If he did, he would most likely fly into Jester's debris and destroy his plane in the debris. 9. When Maverick and Goose are being yelled at by Viper about their failure to obey the hard deck of 10,000 feet above land, they really were never above 10,000 feet from what it appeared in the flight. Also engaging from both teams took place when it was a big no no. 10. Again when Maverick is engaging Jester and Viper, they are yet once again flying without their oxygen masks on. Also, the use of profanity really does not happen when pilots are up in the air. Someone is always listening to their conversation whether it be the air-traffic controller or someone else. 11. When the plane goes into the flat spin, Iceman says that Maverick is heading out to sea, only there is no sea around Mirimar. When Maverick and Goose eject, Goose breaks his neck off the canopy, yet the canopy should have comepletely cleared the ejection path. Reason being is that with the plane spinning around and they should have ejected away from the canopy. Goose really shouldn't have died. 12. When Maverick is trying to get back in the saddle, he pulls away from engaging Jester. His RIO then rips off his oxygen mask and yells to Maverick "where the hell he is going", only Maverick shouldn't be able to hear this due to all of the noise from the engines and cockpit. 13. When Maverick returns to his orignal aircraft carrier, he is to back up Iceman and Hollywood on Ready 5. When Maverick is launched from the carrier, he performs a roll, why this was done, no one knows. Pilots don't normally perform rolls off takeoff. 14. Maverick later tells Iceman that he is supersonic and that he will be there in 30 seconds, only Iceman is 180 nautical miles away from the carrier. Maverick is traveling at mach 1 and for him to go 180 nautical miles in 30 seconds at mach 1 is impossible. He would have to be traveling at a speed of mach 44, which translates out to be 32,120m.p.h. (WOW!).
